What we do:

Our mission is to sample the diversity and drama of Penn State's $657-million-a-year research program as a public service to inform, entertain, and inspire the University community. We do this in several ways.

Online: Weekly Features, Probing Questions, and More

We launch regular in-depth reports with text, graphics, audio, and video. Recent features include: Pandemic Evolution?, The Logic of Organisms, and Future Fuel? On the road to a hydrogen economy.

Probing Questions give readers a chance to submit questions about any topic under the sun. We'll contact the experts and track down the answers. Ask a question.

Also, look for Pennsylvania stories, conversation pieces, and explorations that tell the story of research and intellectual activity at Penn State.

Browse or search our archive, which includes the full text of Research/Penn State magazines back to 1993, and a series of dispatches from our reporters in the field.

In Person: Research Unplugged

Join Penn State researchers to discuss issues that matter—genetically modified foods, poverty in America, the future of space travel, and more. Research Unplugged is not just another lecture series. It's an idea based on Cafe Scientifique, a university-town phenomenon that began a few years ago in the U.K. The concept is to create an informal forum, open to all, for exploring ideas. According to one participant, "It's a great way to spend the lunch hour." Join us Wednesdays from noon until one in the gallery of the Penn State Downtown Theatre.

In Print: Annual Magazine

Research/Penn State magazine debuted in February 1980. Founding editor is Harlan Berger. Between 1984 and 2002, the magazine was edited by Nancy Marie Brown. Favorite articles, essays, and artwork from our first 20 years of publication are collected in the anthology, 20 Years of Research/Penn State. In 2004, the magazine moved to an annual. The next issue will be distributed in September 2006.

Some special reports are published separately and made available in class-room sets to middle-school and high-school teachers. See Resources for Teachers for titles and availability. Multiple copies of back issues of Research/Penn State are also available for classroom use.

Internships

Our interns don't get the coffee; they write and revise and revise some more.

We offer a science writing internship program in cooperation with the departments of English, Journalism, and Comparative Literature. Penn State undergraduate students of all majors may apply. Contact David Pacchioli for more information.

A communications internship is also available to students interested in gaining experience in event planning, marketing, and writing. The intern works closely with the coordinator of Research Unplugged to organize the conversation series. All majors may apply. Contact Melissa Beattie-Moss for more information.
